A skilled user interface designer uses the insights and inputs of end-users and other stakeholders creatively, always keeping an eye on the overall consistency and intuitiveness of the complete user interface (UI) being designed. User involvement is crucial; equally crucial is grasping the underlying principles within a design and making sure they can be applied throughout the whole UI.
On the other hand, it is important that user interface design is done hand in hand with software design. The software architect needs to be involved in defining the UI components, and the UI specifications need to be developed in co-operation with software engineers. After all, a UI specification should define all activities taking place during user interaction -- both the expected and the unexpected.
